Google Bus in chennai

Google is coming out with a unique project to introduce people in Tamil Nadu to the Internet world. Christened ‘Google Bus,’ the project will be launched in the State in a couple of months to educate the people on the positive potential of the Internet and its applications.

The ‘Google Bus’ will reach out to the cities and towns and create awareness on how the Internet helps in improving the quality of life.

According to Police Commissioner K. Radhakrishnan, Google had offered to come up with a proposal to share its expertise in helping the police monitor the functioning of 600 plus Internet browsing centres in the city. “They have the technology that will help us in keeping a close watch on various security aspects pertaining to browsing centres,” he told The Hindu here on Thursday.

Explaining the features of the project, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime Cell), M. Sudhakar, said ‘Google Bus’ would be a real bus that would function like a mobile browsing centre.

“The bus will be equipped with computers and high-speed wireless Internet connectivity. They have plans to travel to Tier II and Tier III cities and give exposure to the literate mass to the advantages of the Internet. Of the 600 million literates in the country, only 20 million were actively using the Internet. Tamil Nadu was chosen to launch the project considering the good roads and other infrastructural facilities available here,” he quoted a Google official as saying.

The ‘Google Bus’ would have in-built features that complied with the latest guidelines of security agencies. Every user would be identified and his/her running images captured. “The bus will be a model to other browsing centres. As of now, only a few browsing centres in the city have followed our guidelines.

Release of Apple iPhone 2.1 software

Apple posted the iPhone 2.1 software update today. The new firmware is expected to resolve 3G connectivity problems, avoid sudden application crashes and patch a bunch of reliability and security issues.

The smartphone firmware arrives on the heels of the Pod touch 2.1 firmware that was released two days ago. The iPhone is especially important for iPhone 3G owners, since the software promises to fix the device’s 3G connection problems, which resulted in dropped calls and reduced bandwidth. However, according to CEO Steve Jobs, the 3G connectivity issues affected only "a few percent" of iPhone users. The 2.1 firmware also brings new features and tweaks delivered in 2.1 firmware for the iPod touch, such as support for the Genius playlist feature.

The 231 MB update also includes many bug fixes and improvements that seem to solve most of the complaints users had about the 2.0 firmware.

iPhone drawbacks (for the people in India)

People in india who bought the iphone were very much disappointed that very basic features that they were using with other phones are missing. Here are the list of features that are missing in the iphones,

No video calling

No AD2P on the Bluetooth,

CAN'T share ANY (mp3, images, videos....) files via bluetooth,

Can't use as a wireless modem, (you pay ridiculous data charges to activate internet on your phone , but cannot connect it to your PC and browse when you are at home)

No copy and paste, (cannot copy a part of a.... Say... email & send it....have to type it out yourself)

No 3.2 or 5 mega pixel camera, (the 2MP camera it carries is worst camera I've ever seen... photos look like they have come out of a VGA camera)

No video recording with camera,

No front camera, No flash.

No JAVA support

No physical keyboard (BELIEVE me! this alone is a deal breaker...touch keyboard as good as it looks...once you use it then only you come to know about the importance of having a hard keypad)

No 3G network yet in India, so why pay for expensive 3G phone if you cant use its 3G services ... so, for India, iPhone 2.0 is no better than its first version

No haptic feedback and cannot send MMS,

Can't use as external storage device (16 GB of utter waste. Next time you go to your friend's house & find some interesting songs, movies , etc...Sorry you cannot connect your '16 GB' phone and share it! Apple apparently has a solution.. " BUY MUSIC & MOVIES FROM iTUNES STORE "...... Give me a break will you APPLE!!!)

No FM radio,

Can't use your mp3 files as ring tones,(This is heights man!!!)

Cannot insert any other SIM card….

Cuil - New search engine takes aim at Google

There's a big new search engine launching Monday: Cuil. Developed and run by the husband-and-wife team of Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson, it's pitched as bigger, faster, and better than Google's flagship search engine in pretty much every way.

The most important difference between Cuil and Google is its ranking system. Rather than assigning priority to pages based on inbound links as Google does ("Pagerank"), Cuil analyzes the content of Web pages to divine their relevance to a search query. Costello bristled when I asked if this was a semantic search engine like PowerSet (recently sold to Microsoft). Costello said Cuil's search is "contextual," and that, "we're trying to understand the real world, not the Web."

It's one thing to have a nice interface and show users good results, but the size of the Web index that the engine has access to matters a lot as well. And this is where Cuil makes its boldest claim. Costello says that the engine is launching with 120 billion pages indexed, well over the 40 billion he says Google has (although see Google's latest bluster about the company's power at Web indexing). Costello also claims that Cuil's Web crawler is three times faster than Google's, although it wasn't clear to me if he meant that is per search computer or for the entire system. Compared with Google's globe-spanning data network of data centers, some literally set up near dams so they can tap hydro power more efficiently, Cuil's two puny data centers hosting less than 2,000 PCs total will have to run pretty fast to outpace Google's crawlers.

It won't, though, be as complete as Google. While Google has had failures in extending its brand (Froogle, Google Base), its collection of services that are affiliated with its mainstream search product, like Google Maps, Image Search, and desktop search, can make switching away from Google difficult for users. Costello realizes that Cuil needs to layer in additional services, but as he said to me, the company has to start somewhere.

P400 mobile projector from SAMSUNG

Smaller footprint. Better picture quality. Samsung claims to be offering up these qualities and others in its newly released P400 “ultra portable” projector.

The Samsung P400 does weigh in at under two pounds, impressively, making it reportedly one of the lightest projectors to date. It also measures 5.8- x 2.5- x 5.7-inches, making it nicely compact as well. While I'm not one to find style in projectors, the P400 does have some relatively nice looks for a product of its category.

The P400 offers up 150 ANSI lumens, making it what Samsung says is one of the brightest LED projectors at the moment. You get DLP technology with a 1000:1 contrast ratio, a screen format of 4x3 and SVGA resolution as well. Perhaps the best feature though is the video and audio inputs which let you connect a laptop, DVD player or perhaps even a gaming console.

App-Stick: Portable Freeware Directory

A portable app is a computer program that you can carry around with you on a USB flash drive (a "stick") and use on any Windows computer. When your stick is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug the device, none of your personal data is left behind on the PC.

Most of these applications have been developed as Open Source Software, free to use and modify under the GNU license. Most of these projects accept donations to help support the efforts of programmers and overhead of developing and hosting them on the internet.

Convert an easy to remember password with Password Chart

Picking and remembering strong passwords is a pain. It's easier to convert an easy to remember one. It works anywhere on any computer. It also works offline if you print out the chart. Its free, easy and secure. Everything is done in your browser no passwords are sent over the Internet.

Here is how the algorithm works:

1. An MD5 hash of the chart selection phrase is performed and the first 4 bytes of the hash is used as a random number seed to a Mersenne Twister pseudo-random number generator.

2. The password chart is then filled using sequences of 1 to 3 random upper and lower case letters and optionally numbers and punctuation by grabbing successive numbers generated from the Twister.

3. The reason for the random sequence length is to make reversing the substitution cipher a bit harder. The alphanumeric characters in the password is then converted using the chart.

iPhone launch failure

Apple's new iPhone went on sale Friday to eager buyers worldwide, but there were problems getting the phones to work. Kenny Pichardo, 24, was the first to buy an iPhone 3G at an AT&T store in the New York borough of Queens, but he said it took the store half an hour to get the phone working.

The spectacular iPhone launch failure as the fault of Apple, according to AT&T. In a Bloomberg article, the telecommunications giant places the blame solely on Apple’s iTunes activation servers. An AT&T spokesperson says the problem is worldwide and that Apple is working on a solution. AT&T is Apple’s exclusive US partner and both companies claimed it would only take 15 minutes to activate the phone today.

UK’s most spammed person, Colin Wells - 44001 emails a day

Colin Wells, a workshop foreman, has been named England’s most spammed person by anti-spam provider ClearMyMail. Wells receives 44001 spam emails a day and that works out to about 16 million messages a year, but thankfully, he doesn’t have to worry about clearing the spam messages because ClearMyMail does that task for him – a task that used to take almost two hours a day for Mr. Wells.

ClearMyMail collected spam statistics and released a list of the top 5 most spammed people in England. The company calculated the spam by tracking how many spam emails were blocked by its software program. These unfortunate folks were hit with an average of 33612 emails a day or approximately 12.2 million a year.

About Clear My Mail

MacBook Air keyboard for your iPhone's

iPhones can be upgraded with an “unofficial” third-party application called MacBook Air Keyboard, which will replace the standard virtual keyboard with a virtual MacBook Air version.

Before you install this application, keep in mind that you'll need to jailbreak your iPhone first, meaning you'll have to use a hacking application that unlocks your handset for use with any carrier and opens its operating system to unofficial third-party applications. Those who already have jailbroken iPhones may use the install Installer.app or Planet-iPhone source (part of the Community Sources) to find and install the MacBook Air Keyboard application, but it is strongly advised that you first uninstall any customized keyboards you may be using.

If you don’t want to jailbreak your iPhone, you may want to wait until July 11 – the day when Apple’s iPhone 2.0 software update will arrive and deliver a built-in App Store application for browsing and downloading official third-party applications.

The MacBook Air Keyboard application may or may not become available as an official application in the future. At the time of this writing, the author had made no announcement whether the application will be sold through the AppStore.

Best way to send large file attachments

Most of the email clients which will not allow us to send attachments when it exceeds more than 10 mb. Here are some of the website which allow's you to send more than 500mb.

How it Works?

In normal mode data is transferred to our server unencrypted. This means, potentially, that someone could evesdrop on the data you are sending.

In secure mode, the data is encrypted, so even if it was intercepted by a third party, it cannot be read. This is confirmed by the presence of a padlock symbol on your web browser. It's the same method that's used for protecting your credit card details on shopping sites.

If the big file you want to transfer contains sensitive information, we recommend you use the secure mode.

When a file is uploaded in secure mode, the download will also be secure.

Bill Gates’ last day at Microsoft

Today is Bill Gates’ last day at Microsoft (Friday, June 27, 2008) and typically we would not care that much if a company founder goes into early retirement. But whether we like it or not, there is no denying that Bill Gates has achieved what many of us dream to achieve – to touch as many lives as possible and make your time count. While the modern tech industry loses one of its pioneers. Bill will not simply disappear, but has decided to make room for new talent to evolve and dedicate his wealth and influence to his charity.

The Microsoft we will have next Monday is a company that has lost its charismatic face and that is exposed to more challenges than ever before. Microsoft is in danger losing the Internet race against Google, it has a struggling operating system with a successor that does not appear to be able to turn things around, the gaming and entertainment business lacks focus and there aren’t any significant new ideas coming out of Microsoft that could spark passion for the company. Steve Ballmer may face the perfect storm in the next two years.

Trojan Virus takes pictures of Mac users

Do you think you are safe from malware when you switched to a Mac? You may change your mind soon, especially now that Mac's recent market share gains appear to contribute to the growing interest of malware authors in Macs. Security experts are warning now about a new Trojan horse released in the wild, targeting OS X Tiger and Leopard users. The malware can steal your passwords, avoid detection, log what you type and even take your picture.

If the latest malware alert is any indication, Mac users may be forced to re-think their relaxed approach to online security. There is a new, dangerous form of a Trojan out there which already apparently is circulating in multiple variants that target OS X Tiger and Leopard users. Unlike previous malware attempts that often were proof-of-concept releases, this beast can cause real damage, researchers from SecureMac and Intego are reporting.

SecureMac and Intego said they have updated their virus definitions databases to detect and remove the Trojan.

Microsoft automatic update eradicates password stealing programs

A Microsoft automatic update has eradicated password stealing programs from more than two million computers. The company’s Malicious Software Removal Tool detected and erased Trojan horse programs designed to steal passwords from popular online games like World of Warcraft, Valve’s Steam Client and Lineage Online.

Several malicious programs were wiped out, but most belong to the Win32/Taterf family which is actually a mutation of an earlier password stealing program. According to Microsoft data, China, Taiwan and Spain had the most infected machines. The software tool removed the Trojans from more than 500,000 machines in China alone. Approximately 213,000 machines were cleaned from the United States.

The high infection rate in China and Taiwan is probably due to the prevalence of illegal software and the lack of decent anti-virus software. In addition, Lineage and other online games enjoy a huge following in Asia, but are relatively unknown in the United States. McCormack believes many of the Trojans are transferred via infected USB drives or network shares. LAN parties and the prevalence of Internet Cafes in Asia may have something to do with this.

The password stealing Trojans transfer game logins to a central repository and hackers then try to sell the information to the highest bidder. Then criminals log into the accounts and steal all of the virtual gold and equipment. The accounts can also be used to funnel gold to other players.

Erase your files permanently from your hard disk

Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Windows 2003 Server and DOS. Eraser is Free software and its source code is released under GNU General Public License.

Most people have some data that they would rather not share with others - passwords, personal information, classified documents from work, financial records, self-written poems, the list can be continued forever.

Perhaps you have saved some of this information on your computer where it is conveniently at your reach, but when the time comes to remove the data from your hard disk, things get a bit more complicated and maintaining your privacy is not as simple as it may have seemed at first.

Your first thought may be that when you 'delete' the file, the data is gone. Not quite, when you delete a file, the operating system does not really remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference of the file from the file system table. The file remains on the disk until another file is created over it, and even after that, it might be possible to recover data by studying the magnetic fields on the disk platter surface.

Before the file is overwritten, anyone can easily retrieve it with a disk maintenance or an undelete utility.

There are several problems in secure file removal, mostly caused by the use of write cache, construction of the hard disk and the use of data encoding. These problems have been taken into consideration when Eraser was designed, and because of this intuitive design and a simple user interface, you can safely and easily erase private data from your hard drive.

Top reviews from the most popular software sites and magazines confirm that Eraser is one of the best security tools available for Windows.

"While popular social platforms like Facebook and YouTube have designed specialized Mobile 2.0 applications for Apple's iPhone, local Toronto firms such as www.Peekamo.com have pursued this growing market agnostically with text messaging, which M:Metrics identified in their study as the most popular mobile application. Quite clearly, the market is ripe for growth and the battle lines are being drawn today."

Mini LED Projector : MP100 and MP101 from Honlai Technology

Honlai Technology’s QingBar MP100 is a very small front projector that sports some very high-end technologies. It uses a LCoS technology which provides very good pictures and is often rated as better than DLP for reproducing more lifelike (smoother) images. A LED light source is used for the MP100 and that should make it pretty durable and allow the unit to sip power instead of gulping it. The LED lifetime is rated at 20,000 hours, a huge improvement over regular bulbs.

Honlai also has the QingBar MP101 that has connectors for Apple’s iPod and iPhone allowing you to carry all your video files and then have the ability to project them. Just clip your iPod or iPhone on top of the MP101 and you’re ready to go.

Windows Vista hits sales

Microsoft is struggling to convince consumers that Vista is strong and is the new wave for operating systems. Many people are clinging to their copies of XP, which is the longest-running and most-installed operating system by far.

The software giant recently released the first Service Pack for Vista, which has given new attention to the OS.

More than 140 million Vista licenses have now been sold, which averages out to around three copies every second since it went on sale last January.

"That's a very rapid sales rate," said Bill Gates in a news conference, reports the Wall Street Journal.

YouTubeX is another good online tool which lets you save YouTube videos to your computer. Again, you will need a FLV player to play the saved YouTube videos.
